We Can Make a Difference this Thanksgiving and Christmas 2010

Welcome to Feed Moorpark 2010!

This Thanksgiving and Christmas 2010 the goal is to feed 500 families in the City of Moorpark who need your help as the local food pantry shelves are empty...

In October, 2009, The Moorpark Food Pantry supplied food and other necessities to 2,859 individuals in 675 families, 153 more families than just the previous month. The center can barely keep up with the demand resulting in empty shelves most of the time. Feed Moorpark is a coalition of churches, organizations, businesses and individuals with a plan to address this problem in a way that allows all of us to be part of the solution. WHAT: Our plan is to work with Catholic Charities’ Moorpark Food Pantry located at 609 Fitch Avenue. They already have a relationship with most of the needy in our city and numerous local organizations. Feed Moorpark’s point of contact will be Patricia Calderon, the Pantry’s Manager. Our goal is to make sure that there is always enough food in the Pantry. HOW: To launch the Feed Moorpark initiative we are asking your family to share your blessings by donating food to our neighbors in need. Collected non-perishable foods will go to the Moorpark Food Pantry enabling the distribution of 1000 holiday food baskets this Thanksgiving and Christmas to high risk families and individuals.. WHEN: Early this Saturday morning, we will be collecting donations in your neighborhood. If you choose to make a food donation, we ask that you to place the food in the bags provided by your front door for collection by 8:00 a.m. Our community volunteers will pick up your generous donation and take it to the Food Pantry for distribution. (Note: the Food Pantry cannot distribute opened or expired items.) Below is a suggested list of high demand nonperishable items needed for the baskets:

Food Needed

Pinto bean (1 lb.)

Rice, white (1 lb.)

Breakfast cereal (large box)

Tomato sauce (16oz. can)

Tuna cans

Cooking oil (large bottle)

Sugar (2 lb. bag)

Spaghetti sauce (16 oz.)

Mayonnaise (large jar)

Canned fruit

Jell-o

Peanut butter (16 oz.)

Spaghetti pasta (16 oz)

Ketchup (large bottle)

Flour (5 lb. bag)

Pancake mix (box)

Pancake syrup (large bottle)

I truly believe we are all blessed each day and every day with much to be thankful for year round, regardless of what hardships we may be going through right now.  The social paradox of our time is that prosperity hides poverty.  Good times distract us from the bad.  When pain is not shared, it is not top-of-mind.  Prosperity creates comfort, and comfort is the enemy of change.  Thank you for all your time and support.

Thank You Moorpark!!! The Thanksgiving and Christmas food drives were huge successes! At the Thanksgiving drives, we collected 5232 pieces of food for the Moorpark food pantry. We are still counting the food from this past weekend. Will give an update when we are done. We had several churches helping us pass out bags and collect the donations. These included Life Spring Community, the Fountain, United Methodist, Moorpark EvFree, and Holy Cross. The Active Citizens for Today group from the high school also participated.

Now, we hope to get churches and organizations to help the Food Pantry on a consistent monthly basis, not just at the holidays. If you'd like to help, please email me at mrsmponds@sbcglobal.net. Thanks!

Great start! I hope we can keep this going all year long. I keep saying-people don't get hungry only during the holidays! It's pretty lean at the pantry from January until April easily. Lean for the families especially with most of the men out of their seasonal work.
