What did peter preach? Did he tell the jews in acts 2 Jesus loves them and he died for them so they can all go to heaven and be one big happy family if they only believe? Did he tell them the Good News and make them feel all happy and warm inside and give them a hand shake? Nope. In fact He said You all were the ones who Killed Jesus! He out right told them they were sinners!!!! After He explained the gospel which is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. (1corinthians 15:1-4)So the question came up, They Knew they were sinners and Asked Men and brethren what SHALL WE DO TO BE SAVED? Acts 2:37
Peter said in verse 38
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Acts 2:39-41 (King James Version)
39For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the LORD our God shall call.
40And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
41Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
They had obeyed the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
What does the bible say about someone that doesn't obey the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ?
2 Thessalonians 1:8 (King James Version)
8In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
How can we obey the Gospel?
The death= repentance
When we repent we are dying out to the sins of the flesh.
Matthew 3:2 (King James Version)
2And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Romans 6
1What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
2God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
3Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
The burial= water baptism in His Name
the believer is buried with him in water baptism.
Romans 6:4 (King James Version)
4Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
The Resurrection= The infilling of the Holy Ghost
Acts 2:1-4 (King James Version)
Acts 2
1And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Acts 19:1-6 (King James Version)
Acts 19
1And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
2He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
3And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.
4Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
5When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
The believer must ask for the holy Spirit in faith after he/she has repented of their sins and raise their hands in surrendering to Him and Praise the Lord and before you know it you will be speaking in a heavenly language!
Acts 10:44-48
The Lord will impart His Spirit to you. Mark 16:17
This is what it means to obey the Gospel! Praise His Name!
Do I have to Speak in Tongues?
Someone once asked the question, "do I have to speak in tongues to go to Heaven?" This question arises from a misunderstanding about tongues. The question should be "do I have to have the Holy Spirit to go to Heaven?" The Holy Spirit is a "gift" from God to whosoever will. Speaking in tongues is the sign and evidence that one has received the Holy Spirit!
Many ministers (most of who do not speak in tongues) teach that tongues is just another "gift". These ministers don't understand that there are different purposes of tongues, not just for a public speaking out for an interpretation to follow.
In the passage of scripture to follow I will show you that it is possible to be a "believer" and NOT have the indwelling Holy Spirit.
Acts 19:1-7
19:1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.
4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
7 And all the men were about twelve.
This event took place about twenty years after the day of Pentecost referenced in Acts chapter 2. Twenty years after the initial outpouring of the Holy Ghost in Acts 2 we find people receiving the Holy Spirit with tongues as the sign and evidence!
"Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed" was the question Paul asked these 12 believers. Are you a believer? Have you received the Holy Ghost with tongues? If you have nor received this wonderful experience, it is for you!
Acts 2:39
39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
Yes, this promise of the indwelling Spirit of God is for you! The sign and evidence of the Holy Ghost is tongues! God chose this miraculous event so that YOU cannot take glory for it! If you have not spoke in tongues you do NOT have the Holy Spirit!
The Apostle Paul recognized these 12 men as believers and disciples but also instructed them to receive the Holy Spirit. Being a believer is not enough. You must be born of the water and Spirit as Jesus taught in John 3:3, 5.
